Greece: Hundreds of Thousands Protest Deadly Train Crash

On Friday, thousands gathered in cities and towns across Greece to demand justice on the second anniversary of the deadliest train accident in the country’s history. According to media reports, a workers’ strike resulted in canceled flights and disruptions to maritime and rail transport.

Unions called for a “general strike in both the private and public sectors,” significantly impacting transportation services. Trains, ferries, buses, trams, and taxis were largely immobilized, and many flight connections were canceled.

Reports indicated that early in the morning, tens of thousands assembled in Syntagma Square in central Athens, while groups of all ages marched through the city center in the suburbs.

Fifty-seven people lost their lives when a passenger train carrying students collided with a freight train on February 28, 2023, near the Tempi Gorge in central Greece.

“Two years after the accident, the safety issues that caused it have still not been addressed,” a judicial investigation revealed on Thursday.
