2016 MEDITERRANEAN PEACE AND SOLIDARITY APPEAL

The 91st global voyage of the Peace Boat passed through the Mediterranean   successively from Egypt to Cyprus,  Greece, Italy, Spain and Portugal   and   generated peace action in several ports, on the part of peace-loving, anti-nuclear organizations, anti-racist movements and municipal authorities.

From Piraeus – Greece, one of the major Mediterranean ports, we address  the following peace and solidarity appeal:

  1. Appeal to the international community for the total abolition  nuclear weapons worldwide, remembering and honoring the victims of  Hiroshima and Nagasaki nuclear holocausts of 1945
  2. Support fully international initiatives in this direction, including the 2020 Vision Campaign of the global network “Mayors for Peace”.
  3. Demand the transformation of the Middle East into a zone free of nuclear and other mass destruction weapons.
  4. Express our warm solidarity with the refugees and migrants who have been uprooted from their homes by military conflicts in the Middle East and North Africa. We cannot reconcile ourselves with the fact that thousands of people have lost their lives in the Mediterranean, in their  efforts to cross into Europe.
  5. We are very displeased by the attitude of several European governments whose leaders refuse to receive their share of refugees in compliance with the International law. In addition, we note the lack of  political will at the EU level  in the direction of promoting peace and the long term elimination of the causes that have led millions of people to flee their homelands, seeking refuge to neighboring or other countries.
  6. Consider militarism a source of suffering for all humankind and its societies, and are in favor of a drastic reduction in global military spending, which absorbs an average of 5 billion dollars a day, at a time when poverty is spreading all over the world and the global social crisis is deepening.
  7. Condemn racism and fascism unreservedly, in whatever form these phenomena may appear.
  8. We appreciate   the work of the UN High Commission for Refugees and call for further support to it by the international community.
  9. We greet warmly the Greek people  for their multiform solidarity with the refugees, noting the extremely adverse economic conditions under which this solidarity is being provided. Therefore, we call upon the EU to provide further help and solidarity to Greece and its people.

No to all Wars –   Solidarity with the  refugees – Respect of the international law

No to militarism and racism  – Yes to a world free of poverty and all nuclear weapons
